11/15/05 - Oregon's Minimum Wage to Increase on January 1, 2006
|
| |
The Commissioner of the Bureau of Labor and Industries announced on September 16, 2005, that minimum wage workers will receive a $.25 per hour cost-of-living raise next year. Oregon's minimum wage will increase from $7.25 per hour to $7.50 per hour, effective January 1, 2006.
In November 2002, Oregon voters passed Ballot Measure 25, which requires the Labor Commissioner, who directs the Bureau of Labor and Industries, to annually adjust the minimum wage for inflation based on a rise in the U.S. City Average Consumer Price Index (CPI) for All Urban Consumers for All Items. The annual adjustment is to be calculated every September, rounded to the nearest $.05, and becomes effective the following January. The CPI increased by 3.6%, which translates into a $.25 increase under this formula.
Oregon's minimum wage is the nation's second-highest behind Washington's $7.35 per hour wage. Washington also adjusts its wage annually.
