12/16/02 - New Executive Order Regarding Equal Employment
President Bush has signed Executive Order 13279, entitled “Equal Protection of the Laws for Faith-Based and Community Organizations,” which exempts faith-based employers from the religion regulations in Executive Order 11246. Executive Order 11246 governs fair employment practices in government contracting on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. The intent of this EO is to “ensure that religious organizations receiving Federal contracts are able to take their faith into account in making employment decisions” according to a statement made by the White House. The actual bill states that, “the Nation's social service capacity will benefit if all eligible organizations, including faith-based and other community organizations, are able to compete on an equal footing for Federal financial assistance used to support social service programs.”
