Q: We provide 14 paid holidays for employees, several of which are floating holidays. An employee has come forward and said that we need to observe Good Friday as a paid holiday, since we are observing others. Are we required to do this?

A: With very few exceptions, employers are not required to provide any paid holidays for employees. This is a benefit provided to employees if the employer chooses to. However, there are times when employers need to allow reasonable accommodation to employees to observe religious holidays. In this particular case, since several holidays are provided for floating holidays, the employee may use one of these to observe their religious holiday. Another accommodation could be to provide the time off without pay, or allow vacation time to be used.
