Q: We’ve recently had a number of employees who have been fighting at work.

A: If you have a workplace violence policy, you should refer to that. We highly recommend a zero tolerance policy. Under such a policy, no violence is tolerated therefore the person who throws the first punch is terminated. If you have witnesses this will be easier to determine, if not, disciplinary action needs to be taken with both employees involved. If you are terminating an employee with the potential for more violence take appropriate steps – call us for help. Another thing you should look at is why you are experiencing an increase in fighting. Perhaps it is one individual, a substance abuse issue, or a symptom of other underlying problems. Most importantly, violence can not be dealt with lightly or ignored!
