Q: We recently terminated an employee. We just received a letter from her asking us to provide a letter stating the reasons for her termination. Do I have to provide a letter?

A: A number of states require employers to provide employees with a "service letter" which outlines the reason for termination. Some of these states also require that the letter outline the employee’s work history. The timeline for responding to the request varies. Washington has a service letter law, Oregon and California do not.
